Bvlgari: more than a century of designs

Emigrating to Italy, Sortiro Bulgari opened his first store in Rome in 1884. It was in the 1940s that the brand abandoned the style of the French school to experiment with its own identity: resolutely Italian, Bvlgari unveiled its legendary Serpenti collection. The 1950s, the time of La Dolce Vita and Cinecittà, were the brand's glory years, with jewelry adorning the necks and wrists of the stars and icons of the time: Ginà Lollobrogida, Ingrid Bergman, Sophia Lauren... The style of Bvlgari jewelry asserts itself more than ever with the use of large cabochons and soft silhouettes. In 1960, it was time for color! Italy had become a land of design and the brands enjoyed an unprecedented aura as Italian know-how in shoes, design, and jewelry in particular, was acclaimed. Bvlgari is making a name for itself and daring new combinations of stones; success assured.

Renewing itself, setting trends

The 1970s marked the beginning of international expansion, with the opening of stores in New York (the first across the Atlantic), but also Paris, Geneva and Monte Carlo. In 1977, the Bulgari Bulgari was launched, a very sober wristwatch with a double logo engraved on a perfectly cylindrical piece. In jewelry, Bulgari made the precious stones be worn in an informal way, with new inspirations in jewelry and a very "maxi" fashion. The Bulgari style became even more precise and was echoed in the Monete, Tubogas and Serpenti jewelry collections, the flagship collections of the firm, which innovated and at the same time took up several codes of ancient jewelry, such as the insertion of coins in the jewelry, or the theme of the snake, which was both ornamental and protective. From the 1980s onwards, color again took its place in Bulgari creations, with less conventional and original combinations. In 2000, Bulgari made its mark on the watchmaking world with the acquisition of two great names in high-end Swiss watchmaking: Daniel Roth and Gérald Genta. In 2007, Bulgari even succeeded in designing, producing and assembling a caliber from start to finish for the first time in its history.
