Tag Heuer Monaco: the symbiosis between watchmaking and motor racing

The Tag Heuer Monaco features the famous Chronomatic Calibre 11 combined with a provocative style: its square design and high precision caused a small revolution as soon as it was released in 1969. It was a profound contrast to the watchmaking proposals of the time: Tag Heuer dared to break the codes with this impetuous watch, made for speed. But it was on the wrist of Steve McQueen in the film "Le Mans" that the Tag Heuer Monaco became a lasting memory, becoming the reference watch for racing drivers. The American actor unwittingly became an ambassador for the Swiss watchmaker and contributed greatly to the success of the Monaco, which became one of the drivers' favorite chronographs. Despite the success of Tag Heuer Monaco watches, their production stopped in the mid-1970s. It was not until almost 30 years later that Steve McQueen's iconic watch made a comeback. In 1998, this collection was reissued in a limited edition of 5,000 pieces. Completely redesigned for the occasion, the 2003 Monaco is equipped with a new steel bracelet with 7 square links. The other major novelty is the addition of a brand new mechanism. But it was in 2009, the 40th anniversary of this pilot's watch, that the Tag Heuer Monaco returned to its former glory.

Tag Heuer Monaco: much more than a pilot's watch

Most Tag Heuer Monaco watches -both used and new- have a 39 mm diameter case, although some models are offered with a 40.5 mm case. On the market, there are mainly the two resurrected from 2009 that feature the Caliber 11 and Caliber 12, both of which are water resistant to a depth of 100 meters. However, the Monaco has also been available in other styles since its rebirth in 1998. The first notable model is certainly the Tag Heuer Monaco Calibre 6 watch. Unlike its sisters, this pilot's watch has a steel case with a diameter of 37 mm. It is thus much more discreet than the imposing Calibre 11 and Calibre 12. It has a high-performance automatic movement that offers a 44-hour power reserve but does not have a chronograph function.
