A long history of signet rings

If there is a ring that feeds on a long history, it is indeed the men's signet ring. Characterized by its large bezel, it indeed finds its origin in ancient Egypt: once, its upper part hosted the seal of its owner, also called "sigillum". Hence the other name of the signet ring, the sigillum ring. Long a symbol of power, nobility and aristocracy, worn on the left ring finger by the head of the family, the signet ring has logically become more democratic, although it remains a very masculine ring. It is also a inheritance jewel, although this tradition is less ancient. In the Middle Ages, for example, it was customary to destroy the signet ring at the time of the death of its wearer, and this despite its preciousness since the ring was already made of gold. The signet ring fell into disuse for a while, but was revived in the 17th century, when it became a real piece of jewelry with a family crest. This period thus saw the birth of the heraldic signet ring, as it is still known today in aristocratic families. The design then appeared in relief, whereas it had previously been worked in hollow (to fill with hot wax). The signet ring then evolved in the 19th century, when it became a jewelry item in its own right. The gentleman's ring, made of gold or silver, was then adorned with diamonds, rubies and other semi-precious stones, even enamel. So it was at this time that the signet ring of today was born, with its many evolutions: use of stainless steel instead of gold or silver, more original shapes, modern ornaments...

The signet ring still remains the ring of a lifetime, with its codes

Today, the signet ring is very often a "simple" fashion accessory, as a style statement. Let's not forget, however, that it is also a jewel of belonging, to a family, an organization or a group. Similarly, wearing a signet ring retains its own codes, just like a wedding ring or an engagement ring. For men, but also for women, the signet ring is traditionally worn on the left little finger. But it also depends on the country, the Swiss, for example, wearing the ring on the left ring finger, or even, more rarely on the little finger ... right. One thing is certain, the signet ring remains an elegant and timeless piece of jewelry that demands quality and sturdiness. The 18-carat gold remains the metal of choice for the signet ring, especially since it can be declined in white gold, yellow gold or even rose gold - rarer among its gentlemen, but more original. The symbolism is always present. A woman for example offers a signet ring to a man as a sign of commitment. Leaving aside the fashion effects, the signet ring as a gift is in any case never a harmless act. It can celebrate love, as we said, just as much as the graduation, a birthday or another milestone. To be chosen obviously according to the morphology, the style and the personality of its beneficiary!
