Cartier, the origins


Louis-François Cartier took over the jewelry workshop of his apprenticeship master in 1847. He met with great success among the greatest Parisian elites. The company became a family business: his son Alfred, and his children Louis, Pierre and Jacques were introduced into the jewelry business. The first steps in watchmaking were taken in 1904, when the aviator Alberto Santos-Dumont approached Louis Cartier, telling him of his difficulties in consulting his pocket watch in flight. The latter created the Cartier Santos, the first mass-produced wristwatch.

Iconic creations


Cartier follows up successes by creating iconic timepieces: the Tonneau, the Baignoire, the Tortue. In 1919 Cartier unveiled the iconic Tank watch inspired by war tanks. Cartier is known for its boldness and creative freedom, setting the trends in watchmaking. Its jewelry collections, refined and original, are also essential references: the Panther collection, Trinity, Love, Juste Un Clou...
