Once upon a time... there was the conquest of the skies

In 1930, when aviation was still very much in its infancy, pilots turned to the Swiss manufacturer ROLEX for their Oyster Bubble Back. This watch embarked on new journeys into the unknown with these pioneers, who relied heavily on the watch's indispensable technical features, its reliability and its robustness. While the Rolex Air-King may not have quite the same trailblazing claims as its Oyster predecessors, it nevertheless remains closely linked to the conquest of the skies, and its creation is a tribute to the pioneering spirit of the very first pilots. Indeed, the Air range of watches is especially designed for aviators. Following the Air-Lion and the Air-Giant, it was Rolex Air-King's turn to be invented in 1945 under reference number 4925. While its predecessors may have since fallen into oblivion, the Air-King remains appealing to this day due to its simplicity and affordability. Hard-wearing and understated, it was the crowning glory of the range and was quickly endorsed by renowned aviators, going on to gain great commercial success.

An emblematic watch which has survived for generations

Updated with few aesthetic modifications, the ROLEX Air-King is rightly proud of its resemblance to the legendary Explorer. With the creation of the 5500 model in 1957, the Swiss watchmaker produced an iconic, timeless watch that was to become popular for 37 years. The model has since been further improved with models Air-King 14000 and 14010. And this is where the strength of the Air-King lies: its ability to retain its authenticity while embracing new technologies. The proof is in the pudding with the 2007 Air-King 1142XX, which is a little wider and more formal. However, it was in 2016 that the collection was truly revitalised with the appearance of model 116900. This watch remains faithful to its predecessors while adding new innovations: a 40mm case in 904L stainless steel (Oystersteel), a power reserve of approximately 48 hours, water-resistance of up to 100 metres, and a 3131 movement, certifying it as a superlative chronometer... There are so many reasons why the Air-King has become such an iconic item. It truly is a timeless watch which has been created especially for the skies.
