Earrings and gems, the Tiffany & Co legacy

Is it any wonder that gems feature prominently in the earring collections of Tiffany & Co? Certainly not, since the history of the New York luxury House is written in precious stones and gems: its founder Charles Lewis Tiffany, already dubbed "the diamond king" harbored an unbridled passion for colored stones, and was the first jeweler to hire the full services of an expert gemologist, Dr. George Frederick Kunz. This story dates back to the late 19th century. Extraordinary gems discovered around the world have made the brand's international reputation, and so are unsurprisingly found in the most recent earring collections. From the Color by the Yard cabochon to the Tiffany Soleste drop earring, from the Tiffany Paper Flowers pendants to the hexagonal Paloma Picasso ear chips, earring designs can, for example, be adorned with a tanzanite in ocean blue crossed with purplish hues. This gem was unveiled by Tiffany & Co in 1968 and the House gave it the name in reference to its country of origin Tanzania - it was discovered from Kilimanjaro. Choosing a pair of Tiffany & Co earrings is therefore to do so for its style, but also for its gem. And the choice is wide, even multiple. Among the great designers of the American jeweler, Paloma Picasso has notably imagined the Hexagonal and Barette earrings. They are adorned with amethysts, rubellites, tsavorites (another Tiffany & Co discovery) or even blue topazes, when her imagination does not push the designer towards a combination of four colored gems on ear pendants (blue topazes, citrines, rubellites and green tourmalines).

Iconic designs, legendary designers

The (very) wide range of Tiffany & Co earrings also features the iconic motifs of the American brand, as imagined by its genius designers. To the first of these, Jean Schlumberger, who joined the House in the 1950s, contemporary jewelry thus owes the braided gold wires forming the corded pattern of the Rope Line - which is now found in 18-karat yellow gold and diamond ear clips. In a more design-oriented vein, Tiffany & Co's jewelry revolution came from Elsa Peretti, who arrived in the 1970s and signed iconic patterns that were declined in earrings: Open Heart, Color by the Yard, Bean or even Maille when the gold or silver wire is made into a soft fabric. These motifs can be found in earrings or pendants, in 18-carat gold or 925/1000 silver, the use of this metal being another specificity of the House. Paloma Picasso is the third designer who has left her mark on the history of Tiffany & Co. The brand owes her in particular the Graffiti collections, with messages reproducing her handwriting (Love, Rock Roll, Kiss...) and Olive Leaf with today's creole and mounted earrings versions.
