Pre-owned Rolex Submariner - CresusWatches

Rolex Submariner watch : a diver’s best friend

Launched in 1953, the Rolex Submariner watch became the first diving watch that was waterproof up to 100 meters deep. Frequently regarded as the ultimate diving partner, it kept evolving and pushing back its own boundaries over the years to meet the high requirements of diving enthusiasts. Nowadays, existing Rolex Submariner watches are waterproof up to 300 meters, yet they have remained faithful to the original model while bringing both their performance and design up-to-date.

Rolex Submariner, a fearless watch when facing the deep sea

Pushing boundaries of the world as we know it. That is what Rolex has always been about. In 1926, the Swiss manufacturer invented the first waterproof wristwatch: The Oyster Perpetual. Being a small revolution in the world of watchmaking, this model was able to face waves thanks to an innovative bezel and a screwed crown. Two decades later, the twin lock system named Twinlock was invented, allowing the Oyster Perpetual to face the deep sea. However, it is not until 1953 that the very first water-resistant watch up to 100 meters deep appeared, named the Rolex Submariner.

At that time, the Rolex Submariner watch had a striking robust case, offering a perfect sealing. In order to read time into the deep sea, this model possessed luminescent indexes and hands. As for its graduated bidirectional rotating bezel, it was already used as a chronometer to measure exact dive times. Tons of features that made the Submariner the first true diving watch in history. Marketed with the reference 6204, Rolex's first Submariner stood out from the crowd by its right hour hand and its small luminous circle located at the forefront of the seconds hand. Designed for professional divers, this watch came with the "Diver's Friend" message for a good reason. This collection will be produced until 1955 before it made room for even more advanced models.

Rolex Submariner watches have transformed to push their own boundaries

Only two years after its release, the Rolex Submariner watch already started transforming. It experienced the first technical evolution in 1955 with the collection 6200, now waterproof up to 200 meters deep. A year later, a new calibre appeared: the 1030 and its bidirectional winding rotor. These different calibres were quickly certified chronometers.

The Submariner watches experienced a new revolution in 1965 by adding new technical characteristics such as the date display functionality and the Cyclops lens mechanism that made the date easier to read. As a proof of the Rolex expertise, the manufacturer kept modifying its diving watch to make it waterproof up to 300 meters since 1986. Only three years later however, the existing model appeared on the watch market. Even then, it was powered by calibres of manufacture 3135 and 3130 (depending on the models). As a result, the Rolex Submariner watches have not really evolved. However, the collection expanded over the years through special collections and limited editions, while rare vintage models reappeared. The most significant ones are :

  • The green Rolex Submariner watch: also called "Green Sub", this model was released in 2003 to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the Submariner creation. Recapturing some of the aesthetic elements of the Yacht-Master, it possesses a green bezel that is highly different from the latter.
  • The Submariner Red watch: produced between 1969 and 1975, this model displays a red-colored Submariner inscription. Referenced 1680, it is highly sought-after by collectors.
  • The Rolex Submariner Comex watch: Made in the 1960s in partnership with the French company Comex, this watch was even more efficient and effective to face the deep sea, compared to the classic model.
  • The Royal Navy Submariner watch: As its name may suggest, this model was made for Royal Navy divers. It set itself apart by bearing a T inscription on the dial, as well as its sword-shaped hands.

Rolex Submariner, a watch faithful to its origins

Existing Rolex Submariner watches recaptured the main features of the initial model of 1953. They are easily recognizable thanks to their slightly rectangular-shaped Oyster case, their dial featuring large luminescent markers and their graduated rotating bezel. Yet, contemporary collections are offering different technical innovations and come in several models. The 40 mm diameter case of Rolex Submariner models is mainly made of 904L steel. Used in chemistry and aerospace industries, this material is well-known for being highly resistant to extreme conditions. But cases that feature this model were declined with more precious materials, such as yellow gold and white gold, or with a mix of materials (steel and yellow gold for example). Like the 1953 model, most of the Submariner watches feature a black dial. It offers better indexes and hands reading and visibility in sea depths, making it the essence of this collection.

However, you can still find a blue or green dial. Within this same dial, some of Rolex Submariner watches display the date and possesses the Cyclops lens for better reading. These models are equipped with the movement of manufacture 3135. This self-winding mechanical movement offers a 48-hour power reserve and is combined with the Parachrom spiral that prevents from the negative impacts of magnetic fields.

Models that are closer to the Submariner of 1953 don’t display the date. In fact, they are also equipped with the movement of manufacture 3130 that offers a 48-hour power reserve as well. Unlike the initial model, existing Rolex Submariner watches are waterproof up to 300 meters. This performance is allowed thanks to the Triplock winding crown, equipped with a triple sealing mechanism. In addition, the bezel is no longer bidirectional, but only unidirectional to avoid any possible diving accidents. This bezel is graduated over 60 minutes and possesses a ceramic disc that is scratch-resistant. Tons of small details that contribute to the strength, design and performance of this legendary diving watch.
