The Calatrava, an ancient symbol

The name Calatrava refers to the Calatrava Cross, composed of four stylized fleur-de-lis. Its origin dates back to the 12th century: it was the emblem of an order of Spanish knights who distinguished themselves during the Reconquesta. First military order of the country, its members observed rules of life of an extreme rectitude. The coat of arms of the Calatrava implies values of bravery, perseverance and a certain nobility of heart. This cross has been the emblem and official logo of the Swiss watchmaker Patek Philippe since 1887, and was renewed in 1908. In 1932 the brand created the very first Calatrava watch (reference 96) which seems to signify a revival of the manufacture: its creation coincides indeed with the takeover of the brand by the Stern family.

Calatrava Patek Philippe, an iconic collection

Patek Philippe offers a wide range of Calatrava, with cases for men ranging from 35 to 38 mm and 31 to 33 mm for women. Patek Philippe's Calatrava watches are available in white gold, yellow gold, rose gold and platinum, and the cases and lugs can be set with diamonds. Depending on the model, the Calatrava watch movement is equipped with a 215 PS, 240, 324 S C or 240 PS C caliber and a Gyromax balance. The Patek Philippe Calatrava watch is equipped with a two-position crown that allows the setting of the time and the winding of the movement. On the complication side, the Patek Calatrava watch has a power reserve of over 40 hours. Some Calatrava models feature a date window at 3 o'clock and a small seconds at 6 o'clock. While some models keep a very sober exterior, other models of Patek Philippe Calatrava watches display a specificity of luxury watchmaking thanks to its bezel decorated with "clous de Paris".
