Oyster Rolex: the world's first waterproof wristwatch

Oyster watches are among the most famous timepieces in the world. By becoming the first waterproof wristwatch in history, the original Oyster model has played a predominant role in the success of Rolex, but also for the development of the entire watch industry. It was in 1926 that Rolex created the Rolex Oyster. One year later, the Londoner Mercedes Gleitze achieved the extraordinary crossing of the English Channel by swimming in 15 hours and 15 minutes. This feat hid a second one: thanks to its screwed crown, the Rolex Oyster that the swimmer wore on her wrist during the crossing remained in perfect working order. This is how the Swiss manufacturer proved to the world the exceptional water-resistance of its timepieces. In 1931, the success of the Oyster case was reinforced by a technological innovation that would redefine the way the watch industry worked: the automatic winding mechanism with a rotating rotor. This mechanism will be at the origin of all modern automatic movements.

Oyster Perpetual: iconic luxury watches with a sober and elegant design

During the 1930s, the Rolex Oyster collection became the Oyster Perpetual series. Gradually, the famous Oyster case is imposed on a large majority of Rolex watches, including the most renowned, such as the Submariner. Cut directly from a block of stainless steel (the manufacturing process requires more than a hundred operations), it guarantees optimal water-resistance (up to a hundred meters) and resistance to any test. Rolex Oyster Perpetual watches are always appreciated for their perfect reliability and the elegance of their design, of a great sobriety: three hands overhang the dial, which does not have any diamond or ornament. For men and women, the Oyster bracelet is available in gold and steel, or in a combination of gold and steel. Their characteristics make them very popular with lovers of prestigious watches with discreet and subtle lines.
