Dior, a world-renowned luxury brand

While Dior was one of the first haute-couture houses to start creating watches, it first and foremost revolutionized the fashion world in the 1950s by making iconic textile pieces. The famous French brand then successfully entered several iconic luxury sectors, including fine watches, jewelry, perfumes and cosmetics. The Dior story began in 1946 when Christian Dior opened a fashion boutique with the finances of French tycoon Marcel Boussac. The young designer, who would soon become an icon of haute-couture, had previously worked for the couturier Robert Piguet as a pattern maker and designer. The Dior boutique opens its doors to the public in Paris, at 30 avenue Montaigne. A year later, his first collection will seduce all the lovers of haute-couture. The famous editor-in-chief of Harper's Bazaar magazine, Carmel Snow, celebrated these new creations by characterizing their style as "New-Look". This "New-Look" style, and the successive designs developed by the house, were exceptionally successful around the world. Dior then wanted to diversify its production. In 1947, the brand launched a collection of perfumes, then created leather goods, jewelry and luxury watches during the following decades.

Dior watches, successful watch collections

It was in 1975 that Dior made a grand entrance into the luxury watch industry. The brand inaugurated its collections with a watch model imagined in the mythical workshops of the Avenue Montaigne (but manufactured in the cradle of watchmaking, in La Chaux-de-Fonds). With their sober and classic style, these first watch creations were considered above all as fashion accessories. It wasn't until 2001 that Dior watches were definitely credible in the eyes of the purists of fine watchmaking. That year, the House set up its own watch manufacturing and development structure in La Chaux-de-Fonds, the historic birthplace of precision watchmaking: Ateliers Horlogers Dior S.A. From 2003 to 2006, three Dior watches will mark the brand's watchmaking history: - The "D de Dior", created by Victoire de Castellane in 2003, which reinvented the codes of women's models by offering jewel watches adorned with gold, diamonds and ornamental stones. - The Chiffre Rouge collection for men. The model becomes an emblematic reference thanks to an ambivalent design between classicism and avant-gardism. - The Dior Christal watch designed by John Galliano, which definitively establishes the legitimacy of the house among watch lovers and collectors. The Dior VIII watch for men, released in 2011, will be another major success for the House. With its superb graphic lines, its beautiful matte black color, its high-tech ceramic design and its subtle references to the "8", Christian Dior's fetish number, this model symbolizes the successful alliance between haute couture, watchmaking and jewelry.
