Le Vermeil est considéré comme un métal précieux. En effet, il s'agit d'un alliage constitué d'argent recouvert d'or, de 18 ou 22 carats.
L'ajout d'une couche d'or sur les objets en argent est connu depuis l'antiquité.
La liaison entre les deux métaux anallergiques (Argent et Or) donne un plaquage d'une résistance exceptionnelle et ne provoquant pas d'allergie.
